Special Olympics Ireland Appoints Karen Coventry as New Chief Executive Officer

27 Jun 2025

Special Olympics Ireland is proud to announce the appointment of Karen Coventry as its new Chief Executive Officer.

Karen brings over two decades of dedicated service to Special Olympics Ireland.  She became hooked after her involvement at the 2003 World Games, then spent 15 years as Regional Development Officer for Dublin before rising up the ranks to Director of Sport, a position she has held for over 7 years. Her progression through the organisation is a reflection of her outstanding leadership, deep institutional knowledge and commitment to the mission of inclusion and the transformational power of sport for our athletes.

As Director of Sport, Karen has played a central role in the organisation’s strategic development and programme delivery. She has not only represented the organisation at numerous World Games and World Winter Games, reinforcing Ireland’s reputation for excellence and inclusion in sport, but has pushed to create a greater vision of equality within the organisation.

She led in the creation of the first-ever Women in Sport Action Plan, advancing gender equity across Special Olympics Ireland. She serves on the Europe Eurasia Sport Committee, is a Board Member of Gymnastics Ireland, and has been an active contributor to Sport Ireland initiatives—particularly in the areas of coach education and inclusive practice. Karen holds a Master’s Degree in Applied Sport & Exercise Psychology, combining her academic expertise with her practical experience to champion athlete-centred approaches in coaching, competition, and development.

Karen Coventry, incoming CEO, said: “I am deeply honoured to step into the role of CEO at Special Olympics Ireland. Over the past 22 years, I’ve seen how sport can transform lives—building confidence, creating lifelong friendships, and opening doors for people with intellectual disabilities. I’m excited to lead this next chapter, working alongside our incredible athletes, volunteers, staff and supporters to continue growing and strengthening our movement.”

Chairperson of the Board, Brendan O’Brien, welcomed the appointment, saying: “This appointment marks a new and exciting chapter for Special Olympics Ireland. The Board is confident that Karen's deep knowledge of our organisation, combined with her vision, energy, and strategic expertise will be invaluable in driving the organisation forward”.

Karen Coventry’s appointment marks a powerful step forward for Special Olympics Ireland, ensuring continued momentum in delivering inclusive, athlete-focused programmes across the island and building on the proud legacy of the organisation’s work.
