Inclusive Health Programme
People with intellectual disabilities face many barriers to accessing quality healthcare, contributing to poorer health outcomes and significant health inequalities.
These barriers include:
- communication difficulties
- inaccessible health information
- limited training among healthcare professionals
- diagnostic overshadowing, where health concerns are mistakenly attributed to the person's disability
- practical challenges such as transport and reliance on support persons can also limit access to care.
Special Olympics Inclusive Health helps address these barriers by promoting accessible healthcare, providing health screenings and education, and improving healthcare professionals' understanding of the needs of people with intellectual disabilities.
Special Olympics Inclusive Health play an important role in reducing the health inequalities experienced by people with intellectual disabilities by improving access to health services, education, and preventative care.
Healthy Athletes Programme
The Healthy Athletes programme provides free health screenings across areas such as vision, hearing, oral health, podiatry, physical therapy, mental wellbeing, and general health promotion, helping to identify previously undiagnosed health conditions and provide referrals for follow-up care.
Health Education Programmes
In addition to screening, Special Olympics delivers health education programmes that promote healthy eating, physical activity, hydration, mental wellbeing, and self-care, empowering athletes to make informed health decisions.
These programmes also provide training for healthcare professionals and students, increasing their knowledge, confidence, and skills in delivering accessible, person-centred care for people with intellectual disabilities. Our collaboration with universities across Ireland aims to embed this training as part of health professional training. Together, these initiatives improve health outcomes, promote inclusion, and help reduce the health disparities experienced by this population.
The Rosemary Collaboratory Project
Special Olympics Ireland is proud to engage with the Rosemary Collaboratory Project, which researches barriers to healthcare access faced by people with an intellectual disability. The project gathers data from contributors around the world, with the ultimate vision of achieving health system reforms that stand to improve the health outcomes of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
