South Galway Lakers Honoured with Sports Award at Galway Cathaoirleach Awards
Special Olympics Ireland is proud to congratulate South Galway Lakers Special Olympics Sports Club, who were named the winner of the Sports Award at the Galway Cathaoirleach Awards last Friday evening.
Shortlisted alongside a host of exceptional local sports organisations, the club’s win came as a wonderful—and very welcome—surprise. Representing the Lakers on the night were senior athlete Bryan Dolan, his mother Geraldine, and Head Coach Mairéad Daly, who were, by all accounts, utterly stunned when South Galway Lakers was announced as the winner.
This award is a powerful recognition of the passion, commitment, and community spirit that define the club. Under Mairéad Daly’s outstanding leadership, South Galway Lakers has become a place where athletes with intellectual disabilities can grow in confidence, develop their skills, and experience the joy and camaraderie of sport.
The dedication of the coaches, volunteers, families, and—above all—the athletes themselves is what makes this club so special. Their work not only enriches the lives of those involved but also strengthens the fabric of the wider community by promoting inclusion, respect, and opportunity.
Special Olympics Ireland would like to thank Galway County Council and the Cathaoirleach Awards for acknowledging the importance of inclusive sport in our society. And to everyone at South Galway Lakers—congratulations on this well-earned recognition. Your passion and perseverance continue to inspire.
