Ulster Region Athlete Leadership Forum 2025 features learning, positivity, and surprises
The 2025 Ulster Region Athlete Leadership Forum took the theme "Technology and Leadership", making for a fantastic and memorable day.
The forum was held on Saturday 15 November at Dromantine Retreat and Conference Centre, Newry. We were delighted to welcome 41 athletes and 26 mentors from the following Ulster clubs: Breffni Blues Special Olympics Club; Down Special Olympics Club; Lagan Lappers Special Olympics Sports Club; Monaghan Special Olympics Club; Newry All Stars Special Olympics Club; Newry City Special Olympics Club and Ripples Special Olympics Sports Club.
The day was full of learning, connection and fun. A huge thank you to Wayne Denner, who gave an incredibly informative session on using technology safely — with great advice everyone can use. Wayne also gave athletes ideas on how to use technology to improve their lives.
We also want to extend a big thank you to Nicole O’Connor, whose session was a fantastic introduction to Artificial Intelligence. Athletes learned how to use AI safely, creatively and effectively.
We cannot forget to thank the team at Dromantine Retreat and Conference Centre for the warm welcome, excellent food and brilliant facilities. The hospitality made the day even more special.
And of course — a highlight of the day was unexpected! When the fire alarm went off, we all made our way to the muster point where we had a great sing-song together! What a moment — showing teamwork, positivity and Special Olympics spirit at its finest.
The afternoon was spent volunteering by using AI to make Christmas cards for C L A R E CIC (Creative Local Action, Responses & Engagement) to give to their elderly clients.
Thank you to everyone who made the day possible — speakers, athletes, mentors, volunteers and staff. We are so proud of each participant and can’t wait for the next Forum!
