Newry City Special Olympics Kayakers Celebrate Success at European Competition in Greece
Athletes from Newry City AFC Special Olympics Club have returned from Greece following an outstanding performance at the Special Olympics European Kayaking Competition 2026, bringing home two gold medals and four bronze medals.
Held from 29 October to 2 November at Lake Kournas in Crete, the inaugural European competition brought together Special Olympics athletes and Unified partners from across Europe to celebrate sporting achievement, friendship and inclusion.
Representing Ireland with pride, the Newry City team delivered a series of impressive performances, demonstrating the skills, determination and teamwork developed through months of training and preparation.
Among the highlights was a remarkable double gold medal achievement for Fergal Gregory, who claimed first place in the 200m Singles event before joining Unified partner Chris Cooke to secure another gold in the 200m Unified Doubles.
There was further medal success for Patrick Kelly, who secured bronze in the 200m Singles and teamed up with Jack Donnan to claim bronze in the 200m Doubles.
Peadar Connolly and Unified partner Ann Marenghi also delivered a strong performance to take bronze in the 200m Unified Doubles.
Both Peadar Connolly and Jack Donnan put in further great performances, finishing fourth in their respective 200m Singles divisions.
A Memorable Experience in Crete
Beyond the medals, the competition provided an opportunity for the athletes to represent Ireland on the European stage, build friendships and experience the excitement of international competition.
The team enjoyed a warm welcome from hosts Special Olympics Hellas, with training and competition taking place against the spectacular backdrop of Lake Kournas.
From the Opening Ceremony to the final races, the athletes embraced every moment, supporting one another and celebrating each other's achievements throughout the competition.
Reflecting on the experience, Newry City AFC Special Olympics Club shared its pride in the team's performances and the memories made along the way:
"Medals are wonderful, but what makes us beam with pride is how each athlete gave their all and grew as a team. We trained hard back home, brought it here, and delivered."
Alongside Newry City AFC, Special Olympics Ireland would like to thank Special Olympics Hellas, the volunteers and everyone involved in organising the competition for their exceptional hospitality and support.
Special Olympics Ireland congratulates Fergal, Peadar, Jack, Patrick and their Unified partners Chris and Ann on their achievements, as well as the coaches, volunteers, families and supporters whose dedication helped make the experience possible.
Their performances in Crete are a wonderful reflection of the opportunities that Special Olympics provides for athletes to develop their abilities, grow in confidence and achieve their goals, both on and off the water.
