Lakers Athletes Make Their Mark at the Special Olympics Summer Games
The Special Olympics Summer Games 2026 got off to a fantastic start on Thursday 18th June, as athletes from across the country came together for the opening of an action-packed weekend of sport.
Following an energising and inspiring Opening Ceremony on Thursday evening, where President Catherine Connolly shared a heartfelt message of good luck with the athletes, Day 1 of the competitions delivered moments of excitement, pride, and celebration - offering a brilliant glimpse of what is yet to come.
Day 2 of competition was just as successful, especially for Lakers Social and Recreation Club, based in Bray.
Club member Una Hogan delivered an impressive performance in the 50 metre Freestyle race, securing a silver medal on the day.
Another important moment that took place on Day 2 was a surprise birthday celebration for club member Rebecca McAuley. Rebecca, from Coolock, is participating in the bowling at this year’s Games.
The Summer Games have already captured the attention of media outlets including Newstalk, RTÉ and others, with coverage highlighting the incredible talent, determination and spirit of the athletes taking part.
Competitions take place from Friday to Sunday across venues in Dublin, Meath and Kildare, with athletes competing in athletics, badminton, basketball, bocce, bowling, equestrian, football, golf, gymnastics, kayaking, swimming, and table tennis, alongside a Young Athletes Festival and the Motor Activity Training Programme.
