Special Olympics Ireland’s athlete Health Messenger team and staff have been working closely with Mental Health Ireland to co-produce a series of workshops focused on mental health promotion for people with intellectual disabilities.

The aim of these workshops is to support athletes to protect and strengthen their mental health and wellbeing.

Health Messengers Joe McNamara and Patricia Larkin represented SO Ireland at the MHI Information Sharing and Networking Event this month. They spoke to Mary Butler, Minister of State for Mental Health and Older People about the importance of inclusive mental health resources and provisions for people with intellectual disabilities across the island of Ireland. Great feedback was received about the Strong Minds, Happier Lives project and we are looking forward to piloting this programme in May.

After the pilot phase, we plan to offer these workshops to athletes as part of our Health and Wellbeing programme.
