Healthfest 2026 brings female athletes together for wellbeing workshops
As part of our Women in Sport programme, the Special Olympics Ireland HealthFest on 18th October brought together over 30 female athletes, for a great day focused on health, wellbeing and inclusion.
The fantastic workshops supported by Safefood, Mental Health Ireland, Weightlifting Ireland, Breast Cancer Ireland, DCU School of Nursing, plus a Special Smiles team, provided athletes with opportunities to learn more about looking after their health, understanding their mental wellbeing, safe strength training, and dental care. The event focused on helping our athletes develop healthy habits in a fun, inclusive and supportive environment.
The breast cancer awareness workshop was attended by 23 of the participants. A post-event survey found that:
- 94% recognised how often they should check their breasts.
- 100% understood the importance of mammograms.
- 100% understood that breast checking remains important after a mammogram.
- 97% identified the appropriate part of the hand to use and the areas to check.
- 100% reported feeling confident about carrying out a breast self-check following the workshop.
These results show how Special Olympics Ireland health programmes can give athletes the opportunity to gain understanding and confidence about vital health matters – which is a truly life-changing aspect of our mission!
It was wonderful to see everyone coming together to make health and wellbeing enjoyable and inclusive for all. A huge thank you to everyone who delivered the workshops, our amazing volunteers and staff, who supported the athletes and helped make the day such a success.
