On Saturday 6th September we held our Coaching Young Athletes coaching course in Belmullet, Co. Mayo. Our newly re-established Erris Special Olympics Club are eager to get back involved with Special Olympics and will be starting our Young Athletes Programme in the area.

The Young Athletes programme is a play and sports activity programme for children from 4 to 12 years with an intellectual disability. It introduces children to a wide variety of play activities in a familiar, supportive and fun environment where everyone has the opportunity to succeed. Six volunteers completed the course from the club with another two volunteers travelling to Belmullet for the course.

The course has a good mix of theory and practical components for the volunteers to learn how to delivery our Young Athletes Programme. We are delighted to have the Erris Club back involved in the region as it covers a huge geographical area in the beautiful north-west of Mayo. We’re excited for what lies ahead, and look forward to supporting the club as they continue to grow.

Thank you to Our Ladys Secondary School in Belmullet for allowing us to use their fantastic facilities. Our course was delivered and facilitated by Coach Developer John McNaboe and Young Athletes Tutor Annette McGeeney. We are lucky to have both John & Annette on our team who are available to deliver these courses.
