What I Learned Doing My Gold Award

This guest article by SARAH CARROLL explores Sarah's progress and learning from the ALPS programme.

Achieving the ALPS gold award is important to me, and I’ve enjoyed every step of the way.

My favourite part of the process is working together with my mentor, Rachel Bleach. It is such a special part of ALPS; it makes us happy as we’re a great team.

As part of my gold award, I’ve done speeches, interviews, presentations, articles, community work, volunteering, media work and making posters for the ALPS talent competition.

My first interview was with my basketball coach, Mark. We talked about his experiences as a Special Olympics basketball coach. The second interview was with my mentor Rachel, where we explored how she got involved in ALPS and what she likes about it.

My first speech was about the Six Nations rugby competition. My next speech was about songwriting and how I come up with creative ideas for songs.

The ALPS awards have taught me a wide range of skills: communicating, writing, making slides, taking photos, drawing and colouring. It’s also given me some great memories. My favourite memory is doing my gold award with my friends and my mentor, Rachel – and Rachel’s favourite memory is when I sang ‘Jealous of the Angels’ by Nathan Carter at our ALPS talent show!

After I get my gold award I would like to mentor another ALPS member to help them get their award too.
