Empowering Athletes Through Movement: The Ongoing Impact of Fun Fitness and Physiotherapy with RCSI
Special Olympics Ireland continues to strengthen its commitment to athlete health and well-being through an ongoing collaboration with the RCSI School of Physiotherapy. This partnership brings physiotherapy-led screenings and education to athletes across the country as part of our Inclusive Health Programme.
In May, 16 RCSI student physiotherapists supported our Healthy Athletes Fun Fitness initiative at Regional Basketball and Football events. These sessions offered athletes the opportunity to have their flexibility, balance, strength, and fitness assessed, while also receiving practical advice on improving performance and reducing injury risk.
The initiative includes a structured five-week programme for clubs and services that features screening sessions, physiotherapy input during training, injury prevention guidance, and follow-up assessments. Athletes benefit from learning proper techniques for mobility, balance, and stretching, while also gaining a better understanding of injury awareness and management.
This collaboration not only supports athletes with intellectual disabilities but also provides essential training for future health professionals. By promoting inclusive care, Special Olympics Ireland is helping make healthcare more accessible and informed.
The programme continues to play a vital role in helping athletes stay active, perform at their best, and enjoy long-term participation in sport.
