Girl riding horse around arena during competition

Equestrian

Equestrian comprises a number of different events and levels based on the ability of the athlete. Special Olympics athletes who compete in the equestrian events learn to ride, develop sports skills and gain the self-confidence to direct and control a horse.

Special Olympics Equestrian encompasses several disciplines. The events have been chosen to offer a wide range of activities that athletes can participate in successfully. Riders may compete at one level only in competition and the events offered are currently Equestrian, Dressage and Working Trails.

Equitation is judged on the rider’s position and ability to influence the horse, and is the basis for determining divisions.
