I didn’t have many friends, so I would be on my own a lot.”

This all changed when George attended a training course in Waterford where a friend mentioned he was going to a training session. “I said, ‘I’ll come watch’. Before this I’d never heard of Special Olympics, but I joined up and went from there!”

“I had never been a part of any club so it was all very new for me. There were so many opportunities in being part of something so big of something so big – I made new friends, and developed new skills that I didn’t know I could have.”

George thrived in the Special Olympics atmosphere of support and inclusion – taking on ever-bigger challenges including becoming a referee and then a coach. “My local club gave me the chance to do training courses, so I went ahead and did a lot of them! One of the things that’s amazing about Special Olympics is the inclusion – they focus on developing athletes as sports officials and as coaches – it’s about believing in our athletes and involving them in higher roles. It’s hard work at the start, but with the right direction from your club you will get to where you want to be. My advice would be to just do it - go for it and excel. Believe you can go that extra step.”

George’s coaching career had a brilliant highlight as Assistant Floorball Coach for Team Ireland at the 2025 World Winter Games in Turin. For George, it’s just the beginning: “I hope to continue with coaching at further Winter Games. I feel like I belong doing this, and this is my calling in life!”
