Mission
The mission of Special Olympics is “to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with an intellectual disability, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community”.
Vision
Our vision is to build the programme offered by Special Olympics Ireland so that every person with a learning disability has the opportunity, in their local community, to participate in high quality sport and development activities that bring life-changing experiences of increased skills, self-confidence and joy.
Facts
Special Olympics Leinster was established on 12th April 1978 and offers year round sports training & competition to athletes with an intellectual disability in 54 affiliated groups in Leinster.
The Leinster region is divided into 2 areas - North and South Leinster.
The programme covers counties Louth, Meath, Offaly, Laois, Kilkenny, Carlow, Wexford, Mid and South Kildare, and East Westmeath.

Special Olympics Leinster- Athlete Leadership
This programme offers current and former athletes (over 16 years) the opportunity to explore activities outside of sport which empower them as individuals to undertake tasks that they may not have previously experienced i.e. a spokesperson, coach, officiate or volunteer.

Family Programme
Special Olympics has a vibrant and active Family Support Programme organised at National, Regional and local level.
We constantly strives to involve families, extended families and care providers of Special Olympics athletes and encourage them participate and share in the joys of the Special Olympics programme.
