2011 Special Olympics European Basketball Week    600 athletes participated in a week-long series of events throughout Ireland

Special Olympics Ireland Clubs

There are more than 400 Special Olympics clubs throughout Ireland who provide sports training and coaching on a weekly basis to more than 10,500 athletes with intellectual disabilities. These clubs have been set up by community groups, intellectual disability service providers, and special schools.

Throughout 2012 we will be showcasing the fantastic work that takes place on a weekly basis in our clubs throughout the island of Ireland with a regularly updated Club in Focus.

Lucan Hedgehogs Special Olympics club formed following the 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games. Some of the original Host Town committee remained on and formed the committee for Lucan Hedgehogs.  Hedgehogs came from the first letter of the housing estates in the Lucan Area.
