Team Ireland arrived home to a well-deserved heroes’ welcome to Dublin Airport on Sunday 21st Sept after a stunning display at the Special Olympics European Games in Belgium. Following six days of sporting competition across seven different sports, talented Team Ireland surged to a total medal count of 57. On top of the gold, silver, and bronze haul, 31 placement ribbons were also awarded to Irish athletes in what was one of the most successful Irish showings at the European Games to date.
The 2014 European Games began in Antwerp on Sunday (September 14th) following a spectacular Opening Ceremony in Brussels the evening before which was attended by Queen Mathilde of Belgium. 2000 athletes from 58 countries were all vying to compete to the best of their abilities in their chosen disciplines.
Once the sporting competition commenced, the 46 athletes who make up Team Ireland excelled with medals, placement ribbons and personal bests all recorded. And the 150 strong Green Army, who travelled to Antwerp, Belgium to cheer on the Irish contingent, had much to cheer about as the Irish athletes performed brilliantly.
On Friday the Irish men’s seven-a-side football team played a great match to secure gold in their match against Israel. Captained by Cork native Wayne O’Callaghan, the team were also awarded the prestigious Fair Play Award in recognition of their exemplary conduct on the pitch. 18-year-old Wayne, who is an athlete with Ballincollig Special Olympics Club, commented: “It is such an honour to represent your country. Not everyone gets a chance like this, so you have to take it. All my friends at home are delighted for me.”
