Benefits of the Young Athlete Programme

The benefits of physical activity are well known and the benefits of the Young Athlete Programme go far beyond play and sport.
  • helps children learn how to communicate and interact with each other 
  • promotes the development of learning and self-help skills
  • introduces children and their parent's to the Special Olympics and a support network
  • prepares children for joining a Special Olympics Club in the future
  • fosters an interest in sport and physical activity

News and Updates


27 tutors have been trained in conjunction with Coaching Ireland to deliver Coaching Children workshops across the country. These tutors will train volunteers and coaches how to deliver the Young Athletes Programme in their local club, service or area. These workshops will ensure a consistent delivery of coach education which  will benefit the children who take part in the Young Athletes Programme. 

To date there are 97 trained coaches across the five Special Olympics Ireland Regions delivering the Young Athletes Programme in local communities.

The Young Athlete Programme was officially launched by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar on October 2nd 2017 at an event run by Healthy Ireland in the National Indoor Arena
