Golf
Golf offers competition at 5 levels in Special Olympics. Level 1- Individual Skills competition is ideal for entry level athletes to learn the basic skills of golf. Athletes can progress onto Level 2 (9-hole alternate shot), Level 4 (9-hole Individual Stroke play) and Level 5 (18-hole Individual stroke play). Special Olympics Ireland does not currently offer Level 3 which is a 9 hole Unified SportsTM event.
In Ireland 930 Special Olympics athletes take part in golf in 94 different clubs.
Benefits
Golf is recognized as a lifetime sport, one that promotes socialization and enhances self-esteem. Overall motor skills are improved and better physical fitness is a result. Hand-eye coordination is refined, and general body control often is achieved. The joy and gratification of experiencing the achievement of new skills learned or a new performance level reached, will add much to the athlete’s personal satisfaction
