Training can begin at 6 years of age and competition at 8 years of age and there is no upper age limit. Special Olympics athletes are just like other athletes who train, who compete, learn to win and to lose.

Training and competition opportunities are available for every athlete regardless of gender, age, or ability. No matter what their ability level may be, athletes can benefit from participating in a Special Olympics programme. No matter what your interest is, there is a sport for you.  

Competition Development

Special Olympics Ireland offers training and competition opportunities for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, who train, compete, and learn to win and lose.

Special Olympics Athletes' oath is "Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt!"
