Bowling
The game of bowling consists of ten frames. Players deliver a ball towards ten pins in an attempt to knock down as many as possible. In each of the first 9 frames the player delivers two balls unless they knock all 10 pins on the first ball - a "Strike". A player who scores a "strike" or a "spare" (all 10 pins knocked by 2 consecutive balls in a frame) in the 10th frame will deliver three balls. Every frame must be completed by each player playing consecutively.
Bowling is a lifetime fitness sport which contributes to balance, coordination and motor skills. Bowling is able to fill the needs of so many people because it is, above all, a simple game. The rules are not complex and the basics of how to roll the ball are quickly learned.
In Ireland 3,578 Special Olympics athletes take part in bowling in 152 different clubs.
