Members of Team Ireland Ladies Basketball Team, with Head Coach Antoinette Campbell; Assistant Head of Delegation (Sport), Noreen O’Connell, and recently Basketball Ireland Secretary General, Bernard O’Byrne.  The players were introduced to the crowd during the Basketball Ireland Men’s Superleague Finals on Sunday 27th March 2011 at the National Basketball Arena.

The basketball programme offers competition opportunities for athletes of all abilities. For the more experienced players full 5-a-side team competitions exist. Individual skills competitions also provide a competition opportunity for entry level players.  

In Ireland 2,446 Special Olympics athletes take part in basketball in 127 different clubs.

The benefits of Basketball in Special Olympics are as follows:

  • Increases athletes level of physical fitness
  • Teaches self-discipline
  • Teaches the athlete sports skills that are essential to a variety of other activities
  • Provides the athlete with a means for self-expression and social interaction
