Omagh District and Star Breakers Special Olympics Clubs hosted an interclub swimming gala and fun day on the 28th May.

Omagh District and Star Breakers Special Olympics Clubs hosted interclub swimming gala

The day started with athletes, families and volunteers from the Splasin Penguins, Foyle, Strabane & District, Omagh District and Star Breakers Special Olympics Clubs meeting at Ulster American Folk Park Residential Centre for a hearty breakfast. This was followed by a visit around the folk park.
Then it was off to Omagh Complex for the highlight of the day, the swimming competition.  The atmosphere was set as 75 athletes completed a lap of the pool to the cheers and applause from the many family members and friends in the viewing gallery. Athletes from each of the 6 clubs gave of their personal best and more. The coaching, which takes place throughout the year in each of the clubs, was evident in the sportsmanship and skill of the athletes. There wasn’t a dry eye in the gallery by the time it was over. The competition ended with exciting exhibition relays.
After the swimming was completed, it was off to the minor hall in the Leisure Complex for the very important awards ceremony. Each athlete was introduced by their proud coach as they were presented with their medals and awards. For many athletes this was the first time they received recognition for their achievements and it was a very proud moment for them and their families. To end the evening 170 members of the clubs gathered for dinner at Kelly's Inn. This was followed by music, song and dance until 10.30pm. It was a time for most to relax, reconnect with old friends and gain new friends.
As club members dispersed, some going on their long journey home, others to their overnight accommodation I felt a pang of sadness that it was all over but also relief that it had taken place. Undertaking this interclub event was certainly a learning curve for myself and others involved in the planning, but it definitely was worth it as we witnessed the joy and pride it brought to the athletes and the positive responses received from the families and volunteers.

We wish to thank and congratulate all the athletes who took part. They, their families and coaches should be very proud of their achievements. Also thank-you to the coaches and volunteers from each of the visiting clubs especially, Bill Mc Intyre, Paula Armstrong, Paddy Curtis and Pat O’Malley. A special thank-you to William Murray for his generosity in sharing his great pictures. Without these wonderful people none of the above would have taken place.

Regards Rosemary
