Team Ireland – the group of athletes who will represent Special Olympics Ireland at the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens, Greece in June and July 2011, will be selected on Saturday 11th September.

Selections will take place in an open forum at the Regency Hotel Conference Centre, Swords Road, Dublin, commencing at 11am. There will be a break at lunchtime and it is hoped that selections will be completed by 4pm.

Selections will take place sport by sport and there will be short breaks throughout the day as selections are verified and double checked. As each sport has its individual requirements and restrictions, there will be a brief explanation of each sport as we progress through the day.

Following the completion of selections, those athletes who have been selected will receive a formal letter of offer by post. Those who have not been selected will not receive any communication in this regard.

Special Olympics International assigns a Quota for each participating programme (country) and within that, a quota for each sport. This dictates the number of athletes that Special Olympics Ireland may include for participation in the Games. This quota is further divided by gender i.e. a quota of 4 for a sport may be allocated as 2 male places and 2 female places, and Special Olympics Ireland cannot change this allocation.

In accordance with Special Olympics General Rules, athletes are selected by a process known as Random Selection. To find out more about quotas and random selection, please visit our Quick Guide to Competition.

Only a very small number of athletes involved in the Special Olympics Ireland programme, less than 1%, will be lucky enough to be selected on Team Ireland for the Special Olympics World Summer Games. The remaining athletes will continue to train day in day out in their clubs, schools and centres all across the island of Ireland and will continue to compete to the best of their ability at every opportunity.
