Today has been a busy day so far for Team Ireland’s floorballers with both teams in playoff action.

In the first game of the day, Sweden overcame Team 1 to advance to the Final. A spectacular solo effort by Joe McCarthy in the second half will give confidence to Team Ireland as they now prepare to face Switzerland for bronze later this evening. Coach Paul O’Callaghan was buoyed by the Irish spirit shown against the Swedes: “In the second half they stuck at their guns, got another goal; that lifted their spirits. We’ve played Switzerland twice already and it’s a real 50-50 match.”

Team 2 will face Argentina in the 5th-6th place playoff at 18:40 this evening.

17:00  **UPDATE**

Ireland’s Floorball Team 1 left everything on the court in their bronze medal game against Switzerland as they came agonisingly close in what has been described as “the game of the championship”.

Team Ireland raced into a two-nil lead after Willie McGrath’s excellent brace inside the first eight minutes. That gloss was somewhat dulled however as Switzerland pulled one back on the stroke of half time. After the break, a mazy run and tidy finish from George Fitzgerald restored Team Ireland’s two-goal lead before a flurry from the Swiss saw them go 4-3 up with a couple of minutes remaining. Ireland came close on a number of occasions in their frantic push to find an equaliser, however in the dying seconds Switzerland broke away to seal the tie on a scoreline of five goals to three.

20:00  **UPDATE**

Team 2 have just finished the week on a high with a glorious comeback victory over Argentina. Trailing 0-3 after a bright Argentinian opening, a brace each from Thomas Caulfield, Lorcan Byrne and JP Shaw gave Team Ireland a resounding win to secure the 5th place ribbon in their division. There were emotional scenes as the large band of Irish supporters celebrated with the team.

Speaking after the game, Head Coach Michael Lynch expressed his delight: “That was finishing on a fantastic high with the lads. They’re all delighted and I’m delighted for them. They’re going to go home very happy people.”

What a week of top class floorball for Team Ireland, coming away with a 4th place ribbon for Team 1 and 5th place for Team 2 in their respective divisions. Two honest, hardworking squads that the entire country can be proud of, #TeamIreland!!!
