Local Special Olympics Athlete Selected For NBA Cares Special Olympics

Unified Sports Basketball Game at NBA All-Star 2014

Special Olympics Ireland is proud to announce the selection of Valerie Lynch to participate in an All-star NBA basketball game as part of the NBA Cares Special Olympics Unified Sports Basketball Games this month. The third annual Unified Sports Basketball Games will feature 12 Special Olympics athletes from around the globe, including Valerie, who will line out alongside some of the NBA’s most famous players, past and present. The high-profile game will feature as part of this year’s NBA All-Star Jam Session in New Orleans, Louisiana, on Sunday, Feb. 16.

First held at NBA All-Star 2012, the Special Olympics Unified Sports® basketball game will combine athletes – with and without intellectual disabilities – as teammates to showcase the power of Special Olympics’ Unified Sports® in a game involving NBA and WNBA players and legends on Sunday prior to the 63rd NBA All-Star Game later that evening.

Commenting on the Irish involvement in the event, Frances Kavanagh, Senior Director of Sport with Special Olympics Ireland, said the sports charity was honoured to have an Irish athlete chosen to attend such a high-profile event: “We are delighted that Valerie will participate in the NBA Cares Special Olympics Unified Sports Basketball Game, as part of this year’s at NBA All-Star Jam Session in New Orleans. Basketball is one of the most popular sports among our almost 10,500 athletes and this high profile event highlights the role that basketball plays in bringing people together as well as fostering an environment of acceptance and inclusion among athletes with and without an intellectual disability.”

As part of the NBA All-Star experience, the 12 Special Olympics athletes will be treated to an unforgettable NBA All-Star experience including dinner with an NBA legend, in-arena recognition at State Farm NBA All-Star Saturday Night, and tickets to the NBA All-Star Game.

Valerie, an athlete with the Cope Foundation in Cork city, is very excited about the upcoming trip and will fly out to America on Wednesday 12th February with her coach, Mary Kenefick. Valerie, who has been playing basketball for five years, said being involved with Special Olympics and her local club has helped to change her life allowing her to make new friends and travel.

The NBA’s global partnership with Special Olympics began more than 30 years ago when the league helped to introduce basketball as a new sport to the organization. The NBA has since provided sponsorship to Special Olympics basketball tournaments, created public service announcements featuring NBA players, and participated in major Special Olympics events. The NBA's Basketball without Borders program has also featured international clinics for Special Olympics athletes in China, Puerto Rico, Russia, France, Greece, Italy, Brazil, Spain and Mexico. In 2013, ESPN was announced as Global Presenting Sponsor of Special Olympics Unified Sports, supporting Special Olympics’ goal of registering one million Unified Sports participants and coaches by 2015.
