Pauline Connell from Lisburn, Co. Antrim is one of 126 athletes who will represent Ireland at the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games. The Games will run from the 25th June to 4th July 2011 in Athens, Greece.
Pauline will compete in artistic
gymnastics and is currently busy training and preparing for the Games. She attends SALTO Gymnastics Centre and has been involved with Special Olympics for 11 years. She enjoys gymnastics, meeting with friends and learning new skills.
This is Pauline’s second time representing Ireland having also competed at the 2003 Special Olympics World Games in Dublin.
Being selected for Team Ireland in 2003 (where she won 1 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals) and again in 2011 are the highlights of her time with Special Olympics. She also won 5 silver medals at the
2010 Special Olympics Ireland Games in Limerick.
Prior to joining Special Olympics Pauline didn’t have many friends and experienced low self-esteem. Being part of Special Olympics has enabled Pauline to make a lot of new friends and she has become more self-confident, which she really feels good about.
Pauline is looking forward to travelling to Athens, meeting new people and competing for
Team Ireland.
Pauline’s hobbies and interests include meeting her friends, singing and piano lessons.
It is no surprise to hear that Pauline’s sporting hero is Beth Tweddle, the World Champion Gymnast. Her favourite song is ‘Ave Maria’ by Beyoncé. Her favourite actor is Rowan Atkinson while her favourite television programme features his alter ego Mr. Bean. Her favourite film is Madeline. One thing Pauline does not like is weird insects.
