Being a member of TEAM 2011

Prior to travelling to the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens, Special Olympics Ireland will provide the following to you

  • Support for your fundraising activity
  • Training regarding your assigned volunteer role
  • Information on all travel and accommodation for the duration of your trip
  • Uniforms
  • Basic language guide for Greece

*Special Olympics Ireland has received confirmation from the Athens Games Organising Committee (GOC) that they will hold 200 volunteer roles for us.

Once a volunteer has been selected we will ascertain your preferred role, previous Games experience and/or your skills. We will work closely with Athens GOC to assign you to a role based on this information. As a volunteer you could be assigned to one of a number of different areas from Catering to Field of Play; Event Services to Athlete Entertainment or Transport to Guest Services.
Examples of previous volunteer roles undertaken by Irish Volunteers at World Games include:

  • Healthy Athlete Programme 
  • Gate keeping, time-keeper and penalty box monitor at the Floor Hockey Competition 
  • Assisting with accreditation collection and guest services 

Training will be provided for volunteers both here in Ireland and on arrival in Greece.
 
On arrival in Athens, Special Olympics Ireland will look after the following

  •  your accommodation
  • Travel to and from the airport (transport to and from Games venues will be dependent on the process put in place by the GOC)
  • Entertainment on pre decided nights

The hours you work will be decided by the GOC. The days/hours you are not working, we will be encouraging you to go and cheer on TEAM Ireland. On nights that there is no pre arranged entertainment volunteers are free to do as they wish
