Floorball Gaining Momentum

The first ever Special Olympics Munster “Combined Areas” Floorball competition was held on Feb 18th, in the Aura Leisure Centre, Killarney.
A team of volunteers arrived early on Saturday morning to set up the courts, decorate the venue, and put everything in place for what promised to be an exceptionally busy day.

Following an opening ceremony, there was a full round of classification matches, during which teams got to play several short sided matches, to assess which division they would play in. Once these were completed, the competition began in earnest!

A total of 14 teams played in 3 men’s divisions and two ladies divisions. Referees Paul O Callaghan and Pontus Glad were kept on their toes throughout the day, such was the close competitive nature of all the matches. Indeed a penalty shoot out was required to separate two of the teams.

There was a tremendous atmosphere built up in this fantastic venue, culminating in some very exciting finals.

Of course, no competition would be complete without an awards ceremony, and the joy was
evident on the athletes’ faces as they stepped up to receive their medals.

A huge thank you to our Competition Manager, Padraig Aherne, referees Paul and Pontus, and all the volunteers, coaches and athletes, for their contribution to a hugely successful event.

A lucky selection of these athletes will go on to compete at the Ireland competition, and ultimately represent Ireland at the World Winter Games in South Korea in 2013. If the level of skill evident in Killarney is anything to go by, there is no doubt they will represent their country very well on the world stage
