Monies will be raised from the
Bay Run ’11 and divided between Special Olympics Munster and the Bantry Special Olympics group, by sending out sponsorship cards to everyone that registers for the run. Participants are not under any obligation to raise money, however it is a worthy cause and any support received would be greatly appreciated.
Special Olympics is first and foremost a sports organization for people with an intellectual disability, but it provides athletes with far more than the physical benefits of sport. It’s about fun, friendships and team spirit; it’s about a feeling of belonging, and ultimately improving quality of life. Special Olympics changes lives in so many different ways.
Through sport, athletes develop both physically and emotionally, they make new friends, realize their dreams, and know they can fit in – Special Olympics enables them to achieve and win not only in sport but in life too.
Currently there are 52 registered athletes in Bantry competing in athletics, aquatics, equestrian, golf, motor activities and table tennis. There are presently 61 Special Olympic groups in the Munster region covering the counties of Cork, Clare, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford. These groups provide training and competitive opportunities for 2,400 athletes in 12 different sports and are constantly in need of support.
