Rachel Ryan, Ormond Special Olympics Club, Templemore, Co. Tipperary, won Team Ireland first Gold on the track in the 400m. Rachel’s impressive win was not only like Usain Bolt on the track but her celebration had a hint Bolt too. Well done Rachel!!  John Deevy, Waterford Special Olympics Equestrian Club, Kilmeaden, Co.Waterford won bronze in Equestrian yesterday. This is Waterford’s first medal and the first Equestrian medal from Munster. Well done John!!

Aoife O'Sullivan and Ashleigh O'Hagan win 5 medals on great day for Team Ireland. Aoife O’Sullivan, Owenabue Special Olympics Gymnastics Club, won Gold in Gymnastics Clubs, and two bronze in Rhythmic All Round and Rhythmic Ball. Aoife also won a 6th place ribbon in the Rhythmic Ribbon and a 7th place ribbon in the Rhythmic hoop. While Ashleigh O’Hagan, Lisnagry Special Olympics, won two bronze medals in Rhythmic Ball and Ribbon. Ashleigh has also won a 4th placed ribbon for the Rhythmic Hoop and a 5th placed ribbon for the Rhythmic Rope. Well done Aoife and Ashleigh!!

Sean Coleman from Youghal, won a silver medal at the World Games on Monday. Sean was competing in the 25m backstroke in LA. Sean who is a member of Cork Special Olympic
Swimming Club was one of the first athletes from Team Ireland to win a medal at the Games.

40 Special Olympic World Games Volunteers from Munster departed Shannon Airport at 11.30am today. A coffee reception was held for the Volunteers by the Shannon Airport Authority prior to their departure. Also in attendance to wish the Volunteers good luck was Tony Brazil from Limerick Travel and Eóin Ó Béara, Lynda Foley and Sandra O'Donoghue from Special Olympics Munster. Their trip stops over at Philadelphia for a few hours before heading on to LA. followed by a roof top party on Friday night held by Dennis O'Brien with over 700 invited guests attending. Here at Special Olympics Munster we would like to thank the Volunteers for their help, not only in their fundraising efforts to get to the Games, their upcoming support to the World Games but most importantly to their on-going continued support to the athletes, clubs and Regional Office.

2020 Special Olympics Winter Games-
Management Team Application

Special Olympics Connaught are now accepting applications for the 2020 Ireland Winter Games, Management Team. Deadline for the receipt of applications is 12pm on Wednesday 14th August. Please click on the following link for the application pack.




Current Volunteer Opportunities Available In Our Clubs RIGHT NOW!

 

 

**Please note that a general volunteer role will cover a number of tasks including: equipment set up and tear down; registration of athletes and volunteers; inducting new volunteers; supervision of athletes between activities; serving refreshments; supervising the tuck shop**

Galaxy Club Mullingar are looking for volunteers in Badminton, Swimming and Golf. Details are as follow; 
  • Badminton takes place on Tuesdays 10:15 AM to 11:15 at Mullingar tennis Club
  • Swimming takes place Wednesdays 2.45 to 3.30 at the pool in Mullingar Town Park.
  • Golf takes place at the Driving Range at Cullion Mullingar.
Volunteering times depend on the availability of the volunteer
.
 
The Galway Kayaking Special Olympics host friendly get together

The Galway Kayaking Special Olympics Club held an inter club activity last Sunday and invited clubs from Castlebar, Tullamore, and Mallow to join them for a morning of activities on the river followed by refreshments in the clubhouse.

Great fun was had and many friendships formed. The clubs are planning to travel to Mallow next Sept/Oct for another day of water activities.

A big thank you to the Galway Kayaking  Special Olympics Club for organising such a wonderful event. 



About the Connaught region

Special Olympics Connaught provides year round sports training and competition for over 1,300 adults and children with intellectual disabilities in Galway, Leitrim, Longford, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo and Westmeath.
Numerous sports competitions and development days are held annually in 13 Olympic type sports. There are 73 Special Olympics clubs in the Connaught region.The mission of Special Olympics is:
 
“to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with an intellectual disability, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community”.
