Dell and  Special Olympics Ireland recently launched a free smartphone app designed by the team at Dell to support the Special Olympics Ireland Games in Limerick from June 12th – 15th. The app works on android, with the iPhone version due for release closer to the Games, and has a range of exciting features including a location mapping function that enables users to identify where the different events are being held. The app also has a donation function which makes it easier than ever to donate to the Special Olympics. In addition the app allows users to keep updated on latest news around the games and information on all the participating athletes. The team at Dell Ireland is behind the innovative mobile application, which Special Olympics Ireland hopes will be instrumental in attracting lots of supporters to the games this summer in Limerick.

The Launch of Team Eastern Region for the 2014 Special Olympics Ireland Games took place on Thursday, 5th June.  A photocall was held in Terminal Two of Dublin Airport to officially launch the team.  Liz Callery Regional Director for Special Olympics Eastern Region said: "The Dublin Airport launch was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate Team Eastern Region; the athletes and coaches.  The commitement and dedication of the athletes, coaches and management team has been immense.  The very best of luck to all athletes in the Games"

Current Volunteer Opportunities Available In Our Clubs RIGHT NOW!

 

 

**Please note that a general volunteer role will cover a number of tasks including: equipment set up and tear down; registration of athletes and volunteers; inducting new volunteers; supervision of athletes between activities; serving refreshments; supervising the tuck shop**


Galaxy Club Mullingar are looking for volunteers in Badminton, Swimming and Golf. The Badminton takes place on Tuesdays 10:15 AM to 11:15 at Mullingar tennis Club

The Swimming takes place Wednesdays 2.45 to 3.30 at the pool in Mullingar Town Park.

Golf volunteering takes place at the Driving Range at Cullion Mullingar. Volunteering times depend on the availability of the volunteer.

 

 

 

 

Introduction to Coaching Practices Course

On Saturday 6th April, 11 volunteers took part in our Introduction Coaching Course held in the Sligo Grammar school. This course is run in conjunction with Coaching Ireland and is the 1st step on the coaching ladder for volunteers involved in our clubs. Participants took part in a variety of theory and practical sessions throughout the day. Thanks to the Grammar school for their continued support and the use of their excellent facilities. 

About the Connaught region

Special Olympics Connaught provides year round sports training and competition for over 1,300 adults and children with intellectual disabilities in Galway, Leitrim, Longford, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo and Westmeath.
Numerous sports competitions and development days are held annually in 13 Olympic type sports. 
There are 73 Special Olympics clubs in the Connaught region.
The mission of Special Olympics is “to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with an intellectual disability, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community”.
