Intellectual Disability Education Modules

Rehabcare Navan, 9th & 23rd of March 2013

 

 

On Saturday the 9th and Saturday the 23rd of March, Special Olympics Leinster are organising the delivery of the Intellectual Disability Education modules in the Rehabcare Navan.

 

Course content includes the following:

 

Saturday 9th March – 10am – 2pm

·         Introduction to Intellectual Disability

·         Communicating with the Athletes

·         Vulnerability, Conduct, Behaviour and Managing Risk

Saturday 23rd March – 10am – 2pm

·         Athlete Health

·         Relationships and Sexuality

·         Special Olympics Ireland Professional Ethics in Volunteering

Please note that places are limited (maximum 20 participants) and will be provided on a first come, first served basis.

 70 athletes took part in the non-advancement bowling in Ennis Leisure World, a great days bowling was had by all. The volunteers were terrific on the day, led by event manager Larry Parkes and the volunteers from Ennis Golf Club, Limerick and Cork. The competition manager Allan Pickwick travelled from Tipperary to oversee the competition. Thanks to everyone for a really enjoyable day.

Cork Special Olympics Swimming Club urgently need volunteers who can assist them with an extra hour of their programme of swimming. This is an expansion to their club times as they needed to provide more places for new athletes into the club.

Special Olympics Munster held their indoor games event in Lisnagry on Sat 2nd Feb 2013. Over 50 athletes attended the day of fun and skill building activities. The volunteer team enjoy themselves as much as the athletes on the day. The event manager for the day was Orla Hogan and the Skills leader was Padraig Aherne. Thanks to Lisanagry staff for the hall and equipment and the great welcome.

The Munster Regional Bocce event was held on Sunday 3rd March in the Delta Sports Dome Limerick. The athletes attending had all qualified from the area competitions last season and competition was excellent on the day. Well done to Eileen O’Connell the competition manager supported by Roy and Noirina Savage and all the officials who also have been training very hard for the event in recent months. The volunteer team were excellent as always lead by Elaine O’Mahony.

Current Volunteer Opportunities Available In Our Clubs RIGHT NOW!

 

 

**Please note that a general volunteer role will cover a number of tasks including: equipment set up and tear down; registration of athletes and volunteers; inducting new volunteers; supervision of athletes between activities; serving refreshments; supervising the tuck shop**


Galaxy Club Mullingar are looking for volunteers in Badminton, Swimming and Golf. The Badminton takes place on Tuesdays 10:15 AM to 11:15 at Mullingar tennis Club

The Swimming takes place Wednesdays 2.45 to 3.30 at the pool in Mullingar Town Park.

Golf volunteering takes place at the Driving Range at Cullion Mullingar. Volunteering times depend on the availability of the volunteer.

 

 

 

 

Introduction to Coaching Practices Course

On Saturday 6th April, 11 volunteers took part in our Introduction Coaching Course held in the Sligo Grammar school. This course is run in conjunction with Coaching Ireland and is the 1st step on the coaching ladder for volunteers involved in our clubs. Participants took part in a variety of theory and practical sessions throughout the day. Thanks to the Grammar school for their continued support and the use of their excellent facilities. 

About the Connaught region

Special Olympics Connaught provides year round sports training and competition for over 1,300 adults and children with intellectual disabilities in Galway, Leitrim, Longford, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo and Westmeath.
Numerous sports competitions and development days are held annually in 13 Olympic type sports. 
There are 73 Special Olympics clubs in the Connaught region.
The mission of Special Olympics is “to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with an intellectual disability, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community”.
