Eileen O’Loughlin from Rathangan, Co. Kildare is one of 126 athletes who will represent Ireland at the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games. The Games will run from the 25th June to 4th July 2011 in Athens, Greece.

Eileen will compete in Athletics (Track & Field) and is currently busy training and preparing for the Games. She attends the Sisters of Charity of Jesus & Mary Services in Moore Abbey and has been involved with Special Olympics for 15 years.

Since becoming involved in Special Olympics Eileen has participated in many different sports including athletics, shot putt and golf.

Having been selected to represent Ireland at the 2007 Special Olympics World Games in Shanghai, China; Eileen was unfortunately unable to travel due to illness. She competed at the 2006 Special Olympics Ireland Games in Belfast, where she won a gold medal in the 100m and a bronze medal in the 4 x 100m relay. At the 2010 Special Olympics Ireland Games in Limerick, Eileen won gold medals in the shot putt and 100m and bronze in the 4 x 100m relay.

Eileen really enjoys the excitement that she experiences from taking part in competitions. Winning medals have all been special moments for Eileen but achieving double gold in Limerick last year was the highlight of her involvement in Special Olympics to date.

In her spare time Eileen likes playing pool and tennis as well as swimming, eating out, going to the cinema and shopping.

Sonia O’Sullivan is Eileen’s sporting hero. Mick Lally is her favourite actor while her favourite film is ‘The Sound of Music’. On television she loves Home and Away and her favourite song is what else but …….…‘Come on Eileen’!

Ciara will compete in Athletics (Track & Field) and is currently busy training and preparing for the Games. She is a member of Shannon Flyers Special Olympics Club and has been involved with Special Olympics since 2004.

Ciara really enjoys the comradeship that comes with being part of a sports club. Since joining Special Olympics Ciara has made lots of friends and looks forward to meeting them all every week and having the craic.

This is Ciara’s first time representing Ireland at the Special Olympics World Games. She previously competed in the 2010 Special Olympics Ireland Games in Limerick where she won gold medals in the shot putt and 100m.

She is looking forward to training for the competitions in Athens, doing her best for the team and making her Mum and Dad proud. She is also looking forward to having fun and meeting athletes from other countries.

The highlight of her time with Special Olympics was stepping onto the podium to collect her gold medals in Limerick last year, having her photo taken and celebrating her 16th birthday all in the same week!

Ciara’s hobbies include swimming, music, dancing, fashion and watching DVDs on her laptop. Paul O’Connell is her sporting hero while Miley Cyrus is her favourite actress. Ciara loves music and is a big fan of Westlife - she attended their concert in Croke Park last year. On television she enjoys watching Hannah Montana, Home and Away and any talent show featuring music and dancing.

Bridget O’Reilly Synott from Clongriffin, Dublin is one of 126 athletes who will represent Ireland at the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games. The Games will run from 25th June to 4th July in Athens, Greece.

Bridget will compete in the basketball competition and is currently busy training and preparing for the Games. She has been involved with Special Olympics for 13 years and is a member of Prosper Fingal Special Olympics Club.

Bridget previously competed in the 2007 Special Olympics World Games in Shanghai, China where she won a bronze medal in the 5-a-side football competition. She also competed at the 2010 Special Olympics Ireland Games in Limerick in basketball.

Special Olympics has enabled Bridget to achieve a lot in her life; she particularly enjoys having the opportunity to participate in different types of sport and becoming more fit and also looks forward to meeting her friends and coaches at training sessions.

During her involvement with Special Olympics Bridget has had many special moments such as appearing on television, winning a bronze medal in China and meeting Colin Farrell. In Athens, Bridget is looking forward to doing the best for her team.

Bridget’s hobbies and interests include swimming, cycling, walking, pitch & putt and socialising.

Bridget’s sporting hero is Arsenal striker Robin Van Persie. ‘You raise me up’ and ‘Uptown Girl’ by Westlife are her favourite songs while her favourite actors are Eddie Murphy and Pierce Brosnan. On television Bridget enjoys watching CSI.

Hugh will compete in the 11-a-side football competition and is currently busy training and preparing for the Games.

Hugh enjoys being part of a team playing a sport he loves with his friends. He has been involved with Special Olympics for 10 years.

This is Hugh’s first time to represent Ireland on the international sporting stage. He competed in the 2010 Special Olympics Ireland Games in Limerick. His achievements include winning the most improved player title 2009/2010, men’s 11-a-side league division one winners 2010, men’s 11-a-side cup winners 2010 and cup winners 2008.

Hugh’s proudest moment was been named most improved player 2009/2010. He enjoys the cavalcades when returning home from winning/taking part in Special Olympics.

Before joining Special Olympics Hugh was less active than he is now. He used to go swimming in his local pool, whereas now he travels around Ireland with the Donegal team and goes to kickboxing once a week. Hugh now has somewhere different to go every couple of weeks which makes him very happy.

Hugh is looking forward to travelling to Athens where he will get to see a new country, meet lots of new people and hopefully win gold with his team.

Hugh’s interests and hobbies include swimming, kickboxing, cycling, music and dancing.

Hugh’s sporting hero is Celtic player Aidan McGeady. His favourite song is Dirty Diana by Michael Jackson. Hugh’s favourite television programme is A-Team with his favourite actor is Mr.T who stars as BA Baracus in the A-Team. Hugh’s favourite film is Fly Away (Michael Jackson story).

William will compete in the 5-a-side football competition and is currently busy training and preparing for the Games. He is a member of Lisburn Together Special Olympics Club. He is looking forward to travelling to Athens where he will meet new people, represent his country and hopefully win gold.

The biggest highlight of William's involvement with Special Olympics was winning a gold medal at the 2010 Special Olympics Ireland Games which was a great personal achievement for him. He has also represented Ireland at the Special Olympics European Games in Geneva.

William’s life is much better than what it was before joining Special Olympics.

In his spare time William enjoys football, fishing and shopping. His sporting hero is Manchester United star Wayne Rooney. Johnny Depp is his favourite actor and he loves all the James Bond movies. On television William likes watching EastEnders.

Vincent Rockett from Mount Pleasant, Waterford is one of 126 athletes who will represent Ireland at the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games. The Games will run from 25th June to 4th July 2011 in Athens, Greece.

Vincent will compete in the 11-a-side football competition and is currently busy training and preparing for the Games. He is a member of Waterford Special Olympics Club and has been involved with Special Olympics for 10 years.

This is Vincent’s first time representing Ireland on the international sporting stage and he is very proud to have been selected to represent his country. Some of his highlights so far are winning a silver medal at the 2010 Special Olympics Ireland Games in Limerick and making some really good saves!

Although a well-travelled man, Vincent has not been to Greece before and is looking forward to the plane journey and being kitted out in his uniform for the Opening Ceremony.

Before joining Special Olympics Vincent had few leisure activities outside of college (CTI Clonmel, where he was studying for FETAC certification) and working in a Garden Centre. Since becoming involved with Special Olympics Vincent’s life has changed for the better. Vincent really enjoys the camaraderie and the fun and laughter he has with his team mates and also the genuine nature of the people he has met.

Vincent loves travelling and has been to Norway (to visit his sister), Portugal (to visit another sister), England, Wales and Scotland, while France and Spain are next on his list of places to see. He also likes music; particularly pop and Country & Western.

Vincent’s sporting hero is Robbie Keane. ‘Rock to the Rhythm of Love’ by The Beloved is his favourite song. His favourite actor is Vince Vaughan, while his favourite film is ‘Ave Ventura: Pet Detective’. On television Vincent enjoys watching Home and Away.

Annual Regional Meeting

The 2018 Annual Regional Meeting of Special Olympics Connaught will be held on Thursday 11th April 2019 in Hannon’s Hotel, Roscommon at 7.00pm.  All registered athletes, volunteers and family members are invited to attend.We look forward to seeing you on the night and should you require further information please contact the regional office.

Athletics Development Day


We held a very successful development day on Monday 4th March 2019 in the AIT Indoor arena. Just under 100 athletes were in attendance and took part in a variety of Run, Jump, & Throw stations with the emphasis on fun and getting everyone active. Thanks to all the local volunteers and the students from Athlone Community College who helped on the day to ensure all ran smoothly.



The highlight of the day was a team relay activity which all athletes participated in after lunch. A coaches pack with a variety of drills and activities will be forwarded to all after the event. 


Special Olympics Ireland Coaching Conference

The Special Olympics Ireland, All Ireland Coaching Conference will take place in Dublin City University (DCU) on Saturday 30th March. The theme for the conference is 'Coaching the Future' and is open to all volunteers. For further information or to book a place click here




About the Connaught region

Special Olympics Connaught provides year round sports training and competition for over 1,300 adults and children with intellectual disabilities in Galway, Leitrim, Longford, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo and Westmeath.

Numerous sports competitions and development days are held annually in 13 Olympic type sports. 

There are 73 Special Olympics clubs in the Connaught region.

The mission of Special Olympics is “to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with an intellectual disability, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community”.
