Martin Cullen TD, Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism today (24 February 2010) recognised the contribution that over 400,000 people give to Irish sport through voluntary involvement with sports clubs and organisations all over Ireland. “Without this generous commitment the contribution that sport makes in our local communities would not happen,” said Minister Cullen.  Twelve such volunteers were honoured today at a special ceremony – the 2009 National Awards to Volunteers in Irish Sport - in Farmleigh.

Sporting Heroes Line out to Support Special Olympics Ulster Collection Day

Thursday 18th February 2010: Sports stars Mickey Harte, David Humphreys, Simon Best and broadcasting legend Gerry Kelly today attended the launch of the 2010 Collection Day in aid of Special Olympics, which hopes to raise £250,000 on April  23rd. The purpose of the launch, which took place in The Hilton Hotel in Belfast, was to  ask the people of Northern Ireland to get involved in the collection day on April 23rd, either by volunteering or donating on the day.

Forum Maps out Strategy for Special Olympics to Reach More Children & Adults with Intellectual Disabilities across Europe and Central Asia

 Friday, February 5th, 2010: How can Special Olympics overcome financial hurdles to reach more children and adults with intellectual disabilities in Europe and Central Asia, was the main topic for discussion at a business leaders forum in Monaco today (Friday, February 5th) hosted by Special Olympics Monaco under the honouree Presidency and presence of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco, and which brought together some of Europe’s leading entrepreneurs and philanthropists all actively involved in the Special Olympics movement.

Introduction to Coaching Practices Course

Special Olympics Connaught are running an Intro to Coaching Practices course on Saturday 30th November in Galway. This is a 1-day course (09.00am-17.00pm) and is ideal for this interested in starting on their coaching journey with Special Olympics. About the Connaught region

Special Olympics Connaught provides year round sports training and competition for over 1,082 adults and children with intellectual disabilities in Galway, Leitrim, Longford, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo and Westmeath.
Numerous sports competitions and development days are held annually in 13 Olympic type sports. There are 73 Special Olympics clubs in the Connaught region.The mission of Special Olympics is:
 
“to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with an intellectual disability, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community”.
