Awards Ceremonies Begin As Sun Continues to Shine at 2010 Special Olympics Ireland Games

Day two of the 2010 Special Olympics Ireland Games got underway today throughout Limerick and Clare with the first of the award ceremonies taking place in the sunshine.

Plenty of medals were presented to athletes from around the country at the venues by a host of supporters that included JP McManus, Keith Wood, Eamon Coughlan, Micheal O’ Muircheartaigh, Willie O'Dea, Marty Whelan, Tipperary All Stars Hugh Maloney & Conor O'Mahony and Sean Ban Breathnach.

Over 1900 athletes were in competition today throughout the eight venues with the first of the award ceremonies taking place at University of Limerick, Limerick Racecourse, Funworld and Clare Leisureworld.

Day three will get underway on Saturday with competitions and awards throughout the 8 venues. Among the well known faces confirmed to attend tomorrow to support the events will be Paul O'Connell, Keith Wood, Peter Clohissey, Keith Earls, Rosemary Ryan, Micheal O’ Muircheartaigh, Tony Griffin, Shane McGrath and Michael Noonan.

Sports competition will continue tomorrow in 13 sports along with the non-competitive Motor Activities Training Programme. Action will kick off in all venues at 9am with the majority of sports running until 5pm. For further information about the sports and venues please visit here 

There will also be lots of activity in theSpecial Olympics Town tomorrow which is located in the University of Limerick campus including an art workshop in conjunction with the National Art Gallery.

Everyone is welcome to come along, join in the fun and experience the atmosphere. Admission to all venues is free of charge.

For those who are not able to come along in person to cheer on the athletes it is possible to join the thousands of people who already gone online to pass on the eircom virtual torch and leave e-greetings for the athletes.

George Hamilton, from Faythe, Wexford, age 76, who is the oldest competing athlete, and competed in the Pitch & Putt, with Meg Carr, from Letterkenny, Co. Donegal, age 9, who is the youngest competing athlete and won 5 gold medals and 1 silver medal in Gymnastics, at the second day of the 2010 Special Olympics Ireland Games.
