Ruairí O’Toole from An Spideal, Co. Galway is one of 126 athletes who will represent Ireland at the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games. The Games will run from 25th June to 4th July in Athens, Greece.

Ruairí will compete in the kayaking competition and is currently busy training and preparing for the Games. He has been involved in Special Olympics for the past 20 years and is a member of Corrib Canoe Club.

This is not the first time that Ruairí has represented Ireland on the international sporting stage. He was a member of Team Ireland who travelled to an invitational event in Barcelona in 1992. He also participated in kayaking in 2003 when the Special Olympics World Summer Games took place in Dublin. At that time Ruairí won a bronze medal, so he is hoping to do his very best when he competes in Athens.

Ruairí loves being involved with Special Olympics and has enjoyed many great moments. One of his highlights was the reception he and the rest of Team Ireland received when they returned from Barcelona in 1992.

Ruairí has always been a keen follower of sport and loves participating in sport. He is involved in lots of sports including football, bocce and bowling. Participation in sport means that he is always very busy now. He is really looking forward to attending the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens. The thing he is looking forward to most is kayaking in warm water as the water in Ireland tends to be very cold!

Ruairí’s favourite sports personality is Brian O’Driscoll and he is also a huge fan of Westlife. His favourite television programme is Coronation Street and his favourite film is ‘Braveheart’.
