Deirdre Garvin from Claremorris, Co. Mayo is one of 126 athletes who will represent Ireland at the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games. The Games will run from 25th June to 4th July 2011 in Athens, Greece.
She will compete in the bowling competition and is currently busy training and preparing for the Games. She is a member of Castlebar Strikers Special Olympics Bowling Club and has been involved with Special Olympics for more than 6 years. She enjoys meeting new people, taking part in sport and most importantly having fun!
This is her second time to represent Ireland on the international sporting stage. She travelled to the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, China where she received 1 bronze medal and 2 ribbons. She also competed in the 2010 Special Olympics Ireland Games in Limerick. She is much more confident since becoming involved with Special Olympics.
Her hobbies include bowling, kayaking and swimming. Her sporting hero is Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney. Her favourite song is ‘Uptown Girl’ by Westlife. Her favourite actor is Colin Farrell. Her favourite television programmes are Eastenders and Home and Away. Her favourite film is Harry Potter.
