Sarah Shaw from Cork is one of 34 athletes who travelled to Poland as part of Team Ireland to participate at the Special Olympics European Games in September.

Sarah has been involved with Special Olympics for the past 8 years. Her main sport is table tennis, but she also enjoys swimming with her friends at the Cope Foundation and Beech Hill Table Tennis Club in Cork. Sarah has enjoyed much success through Special Olympics participating in and winning a number of medals at regional level.

Before joining Special Olympics Sarah’s life was not as busy as it is now. She wasn’t actively involved in sport and didn’t have regular training sessions to look forward to. Now Sarah is much fitter and trains with her friends twice a week.

This is the first time that Sarah has been selected to represent Ireland at European Games level and she feels very privileged. She hopes to do well in her table tennis competition and is also looking forward to meeting lots of new people and sampling the local food and hospitality.

In her free time Sarah enjoys reading and listening to music and her favourite song is Mamma Mia by Abba.
