Catherine McCarthy from Cashel, Co. Tipperary (Pictured right) is one of 34 athletes who travelled to Poland as part of Team Ireland to participate at the Special Olympics European Games in September.  Catherine won 4th place ribbon in the women's 7-aside football in Poland.

Catherine is a member of the ladies football team for the Special Olympics European Games but is also enjoys playing table tennis and basketball with her friends in South Tipperary Brothers of Charity Special Olympics Club in Cashel. Catherine joined Special Olympics 6 years ago and in that time she has enjoyed many moments of success and achievement, participating and winning a number of medals at Ireland regional level.

Special Olympics has changed Catherine’s life and she loves being involved. Before joining Special Olympics her social life was pretty quiet and she had a very small group of friends. That all changed and now Catherine enjoys leading a fitter, healthier lifestyle and socialising with the many friends that she has met through Special Olympics. Catherine also enjoys being part of a team and the fun and friendship that comes from team sports such as football and basketball.

This is the first time that Catherine has been selected to represent Ireland at European Games level and she is very excited about it.

When Catherine isn’t busy training she enjoys going to the cinema with her friends and watching her favourite soap opera – Emmerdale. She lists Keith Wood as her sporting hero and was over the moon having met him at the 2010 Special Olympics Ireland Games in June.
