Before I left to head off to the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens I promised myself that if I didn’t find a job in Donegal, I would go back into education because that’s what a lot of people were doing. I didn’t get much of an education when I was in school back in the 80s, as I struggled a lot with words when I was growing up and never did my Junior Cert or Leaving Cert so this was the way for me to get back into some kind of education.
I was invited up to the VEC here in Letterkenny in May for an interview. The Donegal VEC IT Training Centre is a statutory organisation delivering quality training services in adult and further education. They also deliver a one year programme in IT Skills for people with disabilities. Everything went well for me and I was invited to come back again in July. After coming home from Athens I got a letter asking me to come for another interview and this time I did so well that I got a letter in August to say I would be starting at the VEC on the 1st of September.
The course is called BTEL General Vocational Studies, a FETAC level 4 award from September 2011 to May 2012. In the course I’ll be studying communications level 4, personal effectiveness plus maths and computer and IT skills. We started off doing IT skills and I am struggling big time but getting there – just need to just get the information to stay in my brain. There are nine other people plus myself doing the course and I’m really enjoying it so far and making new friends and we are all helping each other out if someone gets stuck on Microsoft Word 2003.
