Dermot Leavey from Dublin (pictured above: back row, second from left)  is one of 34 athletes who travelled to Poland as part of Team Ireland to participate at the Special Olympics European Games in September.

Dermot’s sport is bowling and he has been involved with Special Olympics Ireland through St. Michael’s House, for the past 30 years. Dermot has enjoyed much success through Special Olympics winning medals at regional, Ireland, European and World level Games.

Dermot is a keen sportsman and loves being part of a team. In 2003 he volunteered at the Special Olympics World Summer Games when they were held in Dublin and one of his highlights from these Games was meeting Eunice Kennedy Shriver.

Dermot says that he is happy that he joined Special Olympics at a young age as he loves playing sport and has gotten so much enjoyment out of being involved. Participation in Special Olympics has also led to Dermot making lots of friends, so he has a busy social life as well as sporting life now.

Dermot is very much looking forward to attending the Special Olympics European Games along with the rest of Team Ireland who have all become great friends over the last few months.

When he is not busy training James enjoys going to the cinema and listening to music.
