Ruth Geerah from Westmeath (second from the left above)  is one of 34 athletes who travelled to Poland as part of Team Ireland to participate at the Special Olympics European Games in September.  Ruth won 1 silver medal in Poland.

Ruth has been involved with Special Olympics for the past 12 years and is a member of Shoot “n” Stars Special Olympics Club in Mullingar. Ruth’s main sport is badminton and this is what she will be competing in at the Games. Ruth has enjoyed much success through Special Olympics participating in and winning a number of medals at regional and All Ireland level.

Before joining Special Olympics Ruth’s life was not as busy as it is now nor was she as fit or as active as she is now. In fact her favourite day of the week is Tuesday as this is Club night and she gets to meet all her friends in Shoot ‘n’ Stars.

This is the first time that Ruth has been selected to represent Ireland at European Games level and she is very proud and excited about it. She hopes to do well in her badminton and is looking forward to meeting lots of people from different countries at the Game.

In her free time Ruth enjoys walking, swimming and socialising with her friends. Her favourite song is “You raise me up” by Westlife and her favourite sporting hero is David Humphries.
