Support an Athlete

The countdown to the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens is now well underway. There will be 7,000 Athletes representing 180 countries competing in over 24 Olympic sports.
Among those will be 126 Irish Athletes representing us on the international sporting stage. This is an incredible achievement and honour for our athletes to represent not only their community but also their country on an international stage.

The cost incurred by Special Olympics Ireland to prepare and send the athletes to Athens will be in the region of €3,500 per athlete. To assist with these costs, we are launching our ‘Support an Athlete’ programme which will see businesses, clubs, communities and individuals getting behind their local athlete by donating or fundraising €3,500 for sole sponsorship of an athlete or by co-sponsoring an athlete by donating or fundraising a minimum of €1,000 to Special Olympics Ireland.
Once an Athlete is supported, we propose to personalise the relationship by supplying the supporter with a sponsorship pack which includes a certificate of support and details about your athlete. We will provide you with frequent updates on their progress both during training and while in Athens. Meet and greet sessions with the supported athlete can also be arranged to help with any fundraising initiatives. In addition, we will publicise the partnership on our website which will credit all supporters alongside each athlete.
